THE NAMES OF JESUS
( A Bible study
by brother Tarran Dookie)
ALPHA
AND OMEGA
Rev.1:10-11 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day,
and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and
Omega, the first and the last…”
Rev.21:6 “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of
the fountain of the water of life freely.”
Rev.22:12 “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward
is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and
Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”
Alpha is the
first letter of the Greek alphabet and omega is the last letter. (The original
language of the New Testament is Greek.) Our Lord is the Alpha and Omega, the
first and the last, the beginning and the end. He set in motion all things for
He created all things. All things shall also be headed up in Christ. He is the
consummation of God’s plan. The name Alpha and Omega signifies the deity of
Christ since the Almighty God is also called Alpha and Omega (Rev.1:8).
THE
ANCIENT OF DAYS
Dan.7:9,13 “I beheld till the thrones were cast down,
and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair
of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his
wheels as burning fire…I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the
Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and
they brought him near before him.”
Dan.7:21 “I beheld, and the same horn made war with
the saints, and prevailed against them; Until the Ancient of days came, and
judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the
saints possessed the kingdom.”
Rev.1:13 “And in the midst of the seven candlesticks
one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt
about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like
wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire.”
Verses 9 and 13
of the seventh chapter of Daniel refer to God the Father as the Ancient of Days
but verse 22 refer to Jesus Christ as the Ancient of Days. Our Lord is indeed
Ancient for He is before all things. His days are without beginning and without
end. They cannot be numbered.
MIGHTY
GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER
Is.9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of Peace.”
Our Lord is
called mighty God for He is identified as God and He is mighty. All authority
and power has been given to Him. He shall raise us up at the last day. He shall
judge the living and the dead. He shall conquer death and the enemy. He shall
dispense the wrath of God.
He is the everlasting
Father for He created all things. He has held us up under His wings. Like a
father He feeds us. He who has seen the Son has seen the Father.
IMMANUEL
Is. 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a
sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel.”
Mat. 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us.”
The Lord Jesus
descended from His throne of glory to be with us. He died for us and rose
again. He has ascended to the Father but He has given us His Spirit, the
blessed Comforter. Christ in us is the hope of glory. Let us savour the
privilege of God with us. Let us live in His
presence that our hearts may be His
abode.
Lk. 1:35 “And the angel answered and said unto her,
The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall
overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee
shall be called the Son of God.”
Jn.3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned:
but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in
the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Jn.10:36 “Say ye of him, whom the Father hath
sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the
Son of God?”
Jn.20:31 “But these are written, that ye might believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life
through his name.”
1 Jn. 5:13 “These things have I written unto you that
believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal
life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
Rev. 2:18 “And unto the angel of the church in
Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto
a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass.”
He is called the
Son of God because He was not created but rather He was begotten of the Father.
Like begets like. Therefore in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead. He
who is the only begotten Son of God has given us the power to become the sons
of God by believing in Him. Let us worship and serve the Son of God for by Him
we have received the adoption as sons of the living God.
Rev.17:14 “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the
Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they
that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”
1 Tim. 6:15 “Which in his times he shall show, who is
the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.”
See also
Deut.10:17.
At the name of
Jesus Christ every knee shall bow. His name is above all names not only in this
age but also in that which is to come. The Lord told Pilate that He was born
for the very purpose of being a King. He is greater than all the kings and
lords of the earth. He is the only Potentate who is above all principalities
and powers. The King of kings and Lord of lords shall rule with a rod of iron.
MESSIAH
OR CHRIST
Jn.1:41 “He first findeth his own brother Simon, and
saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the
Christ.”
Jn.4:25-26 “The woman saith unto him, I know that
Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all
things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”
Mat.16:16-17 “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou
art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto
him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it
unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”
Heb.1:8 “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God,
is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God,
hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”
Rev.11:15 “And the seventh angel sounded; and there
were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the
kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
See also
Dan.9:25-26; Ps.2:2; Ps.45:7; Jn.20:31; Acts 2:36.
Both the words Messiah (from the Hebrew) and Christ (from the Greek) mean the Anointed One. The Father anointed the Son to set the captives free to bring deliverance to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Because the Lord Jesus loved righteousness and hated iniquity He has been anointed with the oil of gladness above His fellows. He who was crucified has been anointed both Lord and Christ.
BRIGHT
AND MORNING STAR, THE SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Rev.22:16 “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify
unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of
David, and the bright and morning star.”
Heb.1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and
the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his
power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of
the Majesty on high.”
2 Th.2:8 “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom
the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the
brightness of his coming.”
2 Pet.1:19 “We have also a more sure word of prophecy;
whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark
place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.”
Mal.4:2 “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun
of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and
grow up as calves of the stall.”

The Lord Jesus
is the Bright and Morning Star for He is the light of the world .Those who
follow Him shall not walk in darkness but shall be in the light. Let us lay
hold of the Lord that he who is the Day Star may arise in our hearts and fill
us with His light. Let us run to the Lord for the Sun of Righteousness has
healing in His wings. Satan, the prince of darkness, will not be able to
withstand the brightness of His coming. In the city of
SON
OF MAN, THE LAST ADAM
Luke 19:10 “For the Son of man is come to seek and to
save that which was lost.”
Luke 21:36 “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that
ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass,
and to stand before the Son of man.”
Jn.6:53 “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I
say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood,
ye have no life in you.”
Jn.13:31 “Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said,
Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.”
Rev.14:14 “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and
upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden
crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.”
1 Cor.15:45 “And so it is written, The first man Adam
was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

The name ‘Son of
Man’ speaks of the humanity of Jesus. He who is the Son of God took upon
Himself the form of a man. He experienced our temptations that He could succour
them that are tempted. He was made a little lower than the angels for the
suffering of death. He conquered the enemy of our souls in the position of the
Son of Man. Where the first Adam failed, the last Adam, Christ Jesus did not
fail. The Son of Man is glorified and is at the right hand of God and shall
judge all men.
JESUS,
SAVIOUR, REDEEMER
Mat.1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou
shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Phi. 3:20 “For our conversation is in heaven; from
whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Titus 2:13 “Looking for that blessed hope, and the
glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
2 Pet.3:18 “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
Is.59:20 “And the Redeemer shall come to

Jesus means ‘the
Lord will save’ and corresponds to the Hebrew Joshua. The Lord has saved us
from our sins, and He has translated us out of darkness into the marvellous
light of His kingdom. He is the Redeemer of our souls. He paid for us with His
very own body and blood. Let our minds be set on the things above, from whence
also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom.9:33 “As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a
stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed.”
1 Cor.10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual
drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock
was Christ.”
Ps. 61:2 “From the end of the earth will I cry unto
thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Rom.11:26 “And so all
Ps.18:2 “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn
of my salvation, and my high tower.”

Jesus is the Rock. Those who put their trust in the Rock of ages shall not be ashamed. He is our great defence , our strength and fortress, even our strong Deliverer. He is the chief corner stone upon which the whole building rests. We as believers are lively stones being built up into that spiritual house founded upon the Rock, Christ Jesus.
THE
LAMB
Jn.1:29 “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto
him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
Rev.5:12-13 “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the
Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and
honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on
the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in
them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him
that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”
Rev.19:7-9 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give
honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made
herself ready And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen,
clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he
saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage
supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”
Rev. 21:22 “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord
God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the
sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it,
and the Lamb is the light thereof.”
Rev.22:1-3 “And he showed me a pure river of water of
life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In
the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the
tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every
month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And
there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in
it; and his servants shall serve him.”

Jesus is the
Lamb slain from the foundation of the world to take away the sin of the world.
He is our passover Lamb sacrificed to give us life. We shall always be reminded
that the chastisement of our sins fell upon Him for throughout all eternity we
shall know Him as the Lamb. Let us
worship and adore the Lamb for He is worthy.
PRINCE
OF LIFE, PRINCE OF PEACE,
Acts 3:15 “And killed the Prince of life, whom God
hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.”
Is.9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of Peace.”
Col.1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of
his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether
they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”
Gen.49:10 “The sceptre shall not depart from

He is the Prince
of Life for He is the giver of life. The life He gives us is abundant life. He
is called Prince of Peace and
WONDERFUL,
COUNSELLOR
Is.9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of Peace.”
Is.25:1 “O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I
will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old
are faithfulness and truth.”
Ps.33:11 “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”
See also
Is.40:13-14; Col.2:3.
As we turn our
eyes upon Jesus we shall behold how He is wonderful. His life, His love, His
works, His words, His power and majesty are all wonderful. He does all things
well who is called Wonderful. In Christ Jesus are hid all the treasures of
wisdom and knowledge. He has the words of eternal life. We shall not go astray
if we follow His counsel for He is the great Counsellor.
THE
BRANCH, THE ROOT OF DAVID, THE LION OF THE TRIBE OF
Is.11:1-2 “And
there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow
out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of
wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge
and of the fear of the LORD.”
Jer.23:5-6 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and
prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days
Mat.9:27 “And when Jesus departed thence, two blind
men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.”
Rev.5:5 “And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep
not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed
to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”

The Lord chose
THE
WORD OF GOD, THE FAITHFUL AND TRUE WITNESS, THE AMEN
Rev.19:11-14 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a
white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in
righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and
on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but
he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is
called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon
white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.”
Rev.3:14 “And unto the angel of the church of the
Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness,
the beginning of the creation of God.”
See also
Heb.11:3; Rev.1:5-6.
The Lord Jesus is the living Word behind the written word. The world was framed by the Word. He spoke it into existence. By His words shall all mankind be judged. He is the Faithful and True Witness for He was in the Beginning with God. His words are true and they are life. He is the Amen of God. And in Him all things are yes. All His promises toward us are real for He is the Faithful and True Witness. Oh come let us adore Him who is the Amen of God.
