THE  WORD OF GOD

( A Bible study by brother Tarran Dookie)

JESUS, THE WORD OF GOD

Jn.1:1,14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

1Jn.5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

Rev.19:13 “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

See also 1Jn.1:1.

Jesus is the eternal word of God. He is the word of life. He is the living word behind the written word. As we study the Bible let us recognise that Jesus is the grand theme of the word.

THE WORD IN CREATION

Ps.33:6 “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”

Heb.11:3 “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

See also Heb.1:3; 2Pet.3:5-7.

The Lord Jesus created all things. God spoke the world into existence. He upholds all things by the power of His word. Let us put our trust in His word for it is powerful.

 BEGOTTEN BY THE WORD

Js.1:18 “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

1Pet.1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

Acts 13:48 “And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.”

See also Jn.5:24; 2Tim.3:15; 2Cor.5:19.

We are begotten by the incorruptible word of God. Our salvation rests in the word of God. By His word of reconciliation we who are afar off have been brought near. May we who are born again glorify His word.

THE WORDS OF LIFE

Jn.6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Acts 5:20 “Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”

See also Jn.6:68; Ph.2:16.

The Bible contains the words of life. The Lord Jesus has given us the words of eternal life. There is no life apart from His word.

STUDY THE WORD

2Tim.2:15 “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

2Tim.3:16—17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

1Pet.2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

Js.1:21 “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”

Heb.5:12-14 “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

Ps.119:18 “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”

Is.28:9-10 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.”

See also Deut.4:2; Rev.22:18-19; Ps.119:148; Lk.24:19; Acts 17:11; Acts 20:32; 2Pet.1:19.

We must study the word of God to show ourselves approved unto God. We cannot know the mysteries of God, the promises or requirements of God unless we study His word. His word reveals His mind and will and all that pertain to life and godliness. Let us study the word prayerfully and diligently and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

LIVE BY THE WORD

Deut.11:18 “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.”

Job 23:12 “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”

Mat.4:4 “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Col.3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

See also Lk.10:38-42; Deut.11:18-21; Ps.119:103; Jer.15:16.

We need spiritual food to sustain our spiritual lives. He who is content with just the bread of this world and has neglected to feed on the bread of life shall suffer spiritual  loss. His life shall be impoverished. May the word of Christ dwell richly in us that we may supply the body of Christ.

OBEY THE WORD

Ez.33:31-32 “And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.”

Lk.11:28 “But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”

Jn.14:23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

Js.1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

1Jn.2:5 “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”

Rev.3:10 “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”

See also Ps.78:1; Pr.13:13; Is.5:24; Is.66:5; Jn.8:31; Jn.15:7; 1Jn.2:14.

The blessings and promises of God are for those who obey the word. Too many people are hearers only. Blessed are those who hear and keep the word. When we obey His word, God will make His abode with us and we shall enter into His delights.

HIS SURE WORD

2Sam.22:31 “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.”

Ps.119:89 “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.”

Is.40:8 “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

Mat.24:35 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

See also Neh.9:7-8; Ps.33:4; Ps.130:5; 1Pet.1:24-25.

God’s word is settled forever in heaven. The word of God is tried and sure. We can stand on the promises of God for they shall not fail. All the words of God shall come to pass. His word endures forever.

THE WORD OF TRUTH

Jn.17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

Eph.1:13 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

Col.1:5 “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.”

See also Dan.10:21; 2Tim.2:15; Js.1:18.

The Bible is like no other book. It has stood the test of time. It is the truth of God and contains no errors. It has proved to be scientifically and historically accurate. But much more than that, the truth of God’ word has set men free from bondage.

THE WORD OF FAITH

Rom.10:8,17 “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;…. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

1Tim.4:6 “If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.”

Let us feed on His word and be nourished upon the words of faith. As we study His word we shall grow in our faith towards God for His word brings faith. May we be established in His word and be not moved.

THE WORD OF COMFORT AND HEALING

Ps.107:20 “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

Rom.15:4 “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”

Heb.6:5 “And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come.”

There is a balm in Gilead and it is the word of God. His word heals us. His word brings comfort and hope in the midst of all distress and trials. If we have tasted the good word of God, let us be faithful and not drift away.

THE PURITY OF THE WORD

Ps.12:6 “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”

Ps.119:140 “Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.”

Pr.30:5 “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

Our God is pure and holy and therefore His word is pure. As we approach His word let us not be careless with it. Every word of God is pure; let us not trifle with it. Let its purity fill us that we would become pure unto Him.

CLEANSING BY THE WORD

Ps.119:9-11 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Jn.15:3 “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”

The word of God is able to cleanse us. Let us hide His word in our hearts, that we might not sin against God. The more His word resides in us the more we shall shun the evil things and cling to that which is good and holy.

THE LIGHT OF THE WORD

Ps.119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Ps.119:130 “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

The road ahead may look confusing, tomorrow filled with perplexity and uncertainty but the word of God shows us His way. His way is a lamp unto our feet so that every step may be sure. His word is a light unto our path so that our journey is not shrouded in darkness. By His word we are enlightened  with His wisdom and guidance.

THE BURDEN AND INCREASE OF THE WORD

Jer.20:9 “Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”

2Tim.4:2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

Acts 12:24 “But the word of God grew and multiplied.”

Acts 19:20 “So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.”

See also 2Tim.2:9; Acts 6:7.

There is a direct relationship between the burden and increase of the word. As the soldiers of Christ gives themselves to prayer and study of the word a burden will rise up in our hearts and we shall preach the word and the word shall increase and prevail. Let us turn to His word and allow it to fill our hearts and minds.

PERSECUTION FOR THE WORD

Mat.13:20-21 “But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.”

Rev.6:9 “And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.”

Rev.12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

See also Rev.1:9.

Have we ever been persecuted for the word? If we are living a godly life we shall be persecuted. If we are not persecuted maybe the word is not abiding in us. Are we prepared to suffer shame and persecution and even death for His word of testimony in us? May we learn to endure hardness as good soldiers of Christ Jesus.

JUDGEMENT AND THE WORD

Mk.8:38 “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Jn.12:48 “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

Those who seek to discredit the word of God and mock it shall one day be greatly shocked. For the very word they scoffed at shall judge them. Let us respect His word. Those who claim to be Christians and are ashamed of the words of Christ, of them also shall He be ashamed at His coming.

THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT

Joel 2:11 “And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?”

Eph.6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Heb.4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Rev 19:14 “ And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

See also Mat.4:1-11; Jer.23:29; Lk.4:32.

The battle is on and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but spiritual. We have but one weapon of offence and that is the word of God, the sword of the Spirit. The Lord Jesus overcame the temptations of Satan by quoting the word of God. We must learn to do likewise. The abiding word of God shall bring deliverance and victory. Let us hold fast to the word of God and be conquerors. Amen.
