LIFE IS IN THE BLOOD
THE BLOOD OF THE PASSOVER LAMB
1Cor.5:7 tells us that “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us”. When God
sees the blood of Jesus upon us, He passes over our sins and so we are saved from wrath through the
Lord Jesus.
ATONEMENT BY THE BLOOD
Lev.17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood:
and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls:
for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul .”
Atonement is making us at one with God. Under the new covenant we have now received the atonement by Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death. See Rom.5:9-11.
THE BLOOD OF BULLS AND GOATS
Heb.9:11-14 “But Christ being come an high priest of
good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with
hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he
entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling
the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God? ”
Heb.10:1-4 “For the law having a shadow of good things
to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices
which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto
perfect. For then would they not have
ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had
no more conscience of sins. But in those
sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not
possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”
Heb.13:10-13 “We have an altar, whereof they have no
right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the
sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify
the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without
the camp, bearing his reproach.”
Sin offerings and trespass offerings were required under the old covenant. See Leviticus, chapters 4-6. But the blood of bulls and goats was not sufficient to take away sins. God required the blood of the lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Christ became the one all-sufficient sacrifice.
THE BLOOD OF SPRINKLING THAT SPEAKETH BETTER THINGS
THAN THAT OF ABEL
In the books of Moses we have many instances of the sprinkling of the blood of the animal sacrifices. Refer to Exodus, chapters 24 & 29; Leviticus, chapters 1,3,7 & 16; Numbers, chapters 18 & 19.
Heb.9:19-22 “ For when Moses had spoken every precept
to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of
goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book,
and all the people, Saying, This is the
blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the
tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged
with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Heb.12:22-24 “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and
unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable
company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which
are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just
men made perfect, And to Jesus the
mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh
better things than that of Abel. ”
1Pet.1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God
the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling
of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.”
In the beginning of the creation neither man nor beast was allowed to eat flesh. Their food was herbs and fruits. See Genesis 1:29-30. After the fall of man a sacrifice had to be made to provide coats of skin to clothe Adam and Eve. After the flood God told Noah “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you…” (Gen.9:3). According to Gen.4:1-5, Cain made an offering unto the Lord of the fruit of the ground but Abel brought of the firstlings of the flock. God respected Abel’s offering but not Cain’s. Heb.11:4 declares “by faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh”. Abel recognised that sin required a sacrifice; Cain did not. That is why Paul says in Rom.14:2 “For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs”. Paul considers the non-eaters of meat to be weak. Why? Because that person has not seen the stain of sin upon mankind. He who has seen will eat meat.
Abel is the first man mentioned in the Bible to offer a sacrifice and to sprinkle blood. But Jesus, the Son of man, offered up himself as a sacrifice. Today we come to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. That blood, sprinkled upon our consciences, purges our sins and gives us access to God the Father. May we see that the new covenant is the better covenant because Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, is its mediator and the one whose blood has been sprinkled upon that covenant. May the blood of Jesus cover the nakedness, shame and guilt of our sins as the coats of skin, made possible by blood having to be shed, covered the nakedness of Adam and Eve.
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Mat.26:28
“For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the
remission of sins.” See also Mk.14:24 and Lk.22:20.
1Cor.10:16
“The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of
Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of
Christ?”
Heb.13:20-21 “Now the God of peace, that brought again
from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the
blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do
his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus
Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
The new covenant
is the everlasting covenant. It is God’s final agreement with man, sealed with
the blood of Jesus. God offers eternal life to all who will trust in the
finished work at
THE BLOOD OF JESUS, ITS FUNCTIONS & POWER
Mat.26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
The blood has
been shed for the remission of sins. Remission means forgiveness. Without
forgiveness of sin man will always be wretched and unhappy. The blood of Jesus
applied to the sinner’s heart will bring happiness. May we appreciate the joy
of the forgiveness of sins.
Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and
to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to
feed the
The blood of
Jesus is the purchase price by which the
Rom.3:25 “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation
through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of
sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.”
Christ is the
propitiation or atoning sacrifice for our sins. Christ, our mercy-seat, has
appeased the wrath of God intended for us.
Rom.5:9 “Much more then, being now justified by his
blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
As a sinner
condemned we were doomed unto wrath, but thanks be unto God, we have been
justified by the blood of Christ. To be justified means to be held guiltless,
to be accepted as righteous. We are held guiltless by the blood of Jesus and no
longer condemned.
Eph.1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Col.1:14 “In whom we have redemption through his
blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”
1Pet.18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not
redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious
blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
Rev.5:9 “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art
worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain,
and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and
people, and nation.”
We are redeemed
of the Lord, recovered from the captivity of sin. We were held in the bondage
of our vain conversation (way of life) but have been redeemed or bought back by
the precious blood of Jesus. Sunk in the mire of sin, we have been lifted up by
His redeeming love.
Eph.2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes
were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
We were once
like the prodigal, wasting our lives away. We were afar off, gone astray,
walking in the broad way. But the Lord loved us before we loved Him. He reached
out to us and drew us unto Himself. By the blood of Jesus we have been brought
near to the heart of God.
Col.1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of
his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether
they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”
Once we were
enemies with God, separated from Him. Sin separated man from God. But Jesus,
the only mediator, has reconciled us to God. The Prince of Peace, through the
blood of His cross, has stood in the gap and made peace between God and us.
Heb.9:14 “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
The blood of
Christ is able to purge our conscience from dead works. We cannot serve the
living God with a defiled conscience. God’s purpose for us in Christ Jesus is
to make us holy and without blame. The spotless Lamb of God is building a
glorious church without spot or wrinkle. May we place ourselves under the blood
of Christ and be cleansed from every filthiness of the flesh and spirit, serving
God with a pure conscience.
Heb.10:19-20 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to
enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil,
that is to say, his flesh.”
The blood of
Jesus gives us boldness to enter into the presence of God. The veil of cloth is
torn and we have free access to God’s throne through the veil of His flesh. Let
us lay hold of this wondrous privilege and enter the Holy of Holies by the
blood of Jesus.
Heb.13:12 “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might
sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.”
The blood of
Jesus is what sanctifies us. To sanctify is to make holy or to set apart. God’s
desire is for us to be holy, set apart for His great purpose of making us an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
1 Jn. 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in
the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ
his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
The blood of
Jesus cleanseth us from all sin. What a glorious thought! There is no sin too
vile that the blood cannot cleanse. He requires us to walk in the light and to
confess our sins and His blood shall cleanse us.
Rev.1:5 “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful
witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the
earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.”
Sin had
tarnished us. God created us in his own image but sin had left its ugly stains.
But Jesus loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood. The stains are
blotted out, the dirtiness removed, and He has made something beautiful of our
lives.
Rev.7:13-14 “And one of the elders answered, saying
unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came
they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou
knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation,
and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
Our robes are
unclean. All of our righteousness are as filthy rags. But the blood of Jesus is
able to make our robes white. Though our sins be as scarlet, they shall be white
as snow.
Rev.12:10-11 “And I heard a loud voice saying in
heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and
the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which
accused them before our God day and night.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their
testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
We overcome the
accuser of the brethren by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of our
testimony. Satan looks for our faults, our flaws and our sins and accuses us
before God day and night. But we plead the blood of Jesus and Satan’s
accusations fall flat. The blood prevails and we triumph as overcomers.
DO NOT COUNT THE BLOOD UNHOLY
Heb.10:29 “Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye,
shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and
hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?”
We shall suffer
serious consequences if we count the precious blood of Jesus an unholy thing.
The blood of Jesus should always be greatly esteemed by believers. Let not the
enemy get the better of us and cause us to do despite to the Spirit of grace.
Let us not be of them who draw back unto perdition but let us be of them that
believe to the saving of the soul. May the blood of Emmanuel’s veins flow into
us all the days of our lives.
